Super Mario Brothers Game History
Super Mario Bros. is not so much a game, but a franchise that over the years has become a household name. The game is said to be the best selling video game of all time, selling a total of 40,000,000 copies worldwide. It is also believed to be the reason for the end of the video game crash of the early 1980s. Not bad for a character that started life playing second fiddle to a giant gorilla.
The History of Super Mario Bros: Anybody Call A Plumber?
The game was initially released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan on the 13th September 1985 and was developed and published by Nintendo. Created by Shigeru Miyamoto, Super Mario Bros. is a single or multi-player experience of the platform genre. The game proved so successful that it has inspired many other spin off products, including; A television series and a feature film that was released in 1993 and stared Bob Hoskins as Mario.
As the player, you take the lead role of Mario, or in some cases his brother Luigi. The object is simple, battle your way through Mushroom Kingdom and save Princess Peach from the hands of the evil Bowser and his forces. Along the way the Mario Bros. face many enemies called Goombas that can be destroyed by stomping on top of their heads. Other enemies such as turtles or Koopa Troopas, retreat back into their shells, and can then be used to defeat other enemies. But a word of caution, the shells can rebound of walls or any other objects in their way and come back and hit Mario or Luigi.
While travelling through Mushroom Kingdom, there are power ups that can be collected, including; Mushrooms that allow our heroes to be Super Mario or Luigi. Fiery Flowers that turn the bros. into fiery Mario or Luigi, which enables them to throw fireballs, and finally by collecting a Star, Mario or Luigi will become invincible for a period of time.
There are eight worlds that make up Mushroom Kingdom, and each world is further broken down into four stages. At the end of the final stage the Mario Bros. must battle Bowser himself. Once defeated the game moves on to the next world. At the end of the game, the player is giving the choice of playing it in again, only this time at a harder level. In the hard mode, the Goombas change to the faster and tougher Buzzy Beetles, and there is also an increase in the number of obstacles.
Conversions
Since the release of the N.E.S original Super Mario Bros. has since been released on almost every Nintendo console to date.
The game has also spawned many sequels, and the character of Mario has appeared in over 200 video games.
